Born in Santander, Spain, in 1960, Ana Botín is the daughter of former Banco Santander chairman Emilio Botín.
After studying at the Colegio de Estudio Americanos in Madrid, she moved to the United Kingdom and later earned a degree in economics at Bryn Mawr College, a private university in Pennsylvania, USA. She also completed an MBA at the IESE Business School in Barcelona.
Botín began her banking career in 1981 as a credit analyst at her family’s bank, Banesto. In 1988, she joined JP Morgan, where she worked in investment banking and capital markets in New York City.
During her time at JP Morgan, she became executive vice president and played a key role in the acquisition of Banco de Granada in Spain in 1991.
After eight years at JP Morgan, she returned to Banco Santander in 1999 as general manager of the bank’s operations in Spain. In 2010, she became Chair of Banesto, a subsidiary of Santander. In September 2014, following the death of her father, she assumed the role of Executive Chair of Banco Santander.
