Dan Schulman

Dan Schulman

Dan Schulman is an American businessman born on January 19, 1958 (66 years old) in New Jersey. He is currently the president of PayPal, an American company that provides online payment services and is one of the most important in the world. Previously, Schulman was the CEO of the organization.

Currently, the businessman is also part of the company’s board of directors, and from a very young age he has been involved in the business world. He was an executive director in other companies in the sector and also had a brief stint at American Express.

Dan Schulman’s academic background

Schulman attended Princeton High School, a secondary school in New Jersey, where he was involved in sports, including tennis and lacrosse. Later, at the university level, he focused on a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics in Vermont and then pursued a Master’s at a business school in New York.

Dan’s education was closely tied to the business field, business administration, and entrepreneurship, which is why his current position is related to his career path. Since finishing his studies, the businessman’s career took many directions, but always within the same groups: telecommunications, software, and various boards of directors.

Dan Schulman’s extensive experience

Dan Schulman’s business career began at AT&T, a telecommunications holding company. This work experience was not just any in his life, as he spent his first 18 years there, where he climbed the ranks and trained. He began in account management.

As the years passed, and at a young age, he became the youngest member of the senior leadership team, that is, the top executives leading the company. When he left the company, his position was president, and he oversaw several employees with a focus on the markets division.

After that journey, Schulman continued to expand his range of opportunities and joined Priceline, a travel agency where he spent two years but served as president and chief operating officer, and the company grew exponentially, with strong numbers and very good profits.

Virgin Mobile was the next challenge, a virtual network operator that ceased operations in 2020. However, when the businessman joined in 2001 as chief executive officer, he took on the role of one of the founders, and for almost eight years he worked to elevate and correctly position the brand.

Sprint Corporation, another American telecommunications company later acquired by a larger group, was the one that at the time purchased Virgin Mobile’s services at the end of 2008. With the million-dollar sale, Schulman was appointed president of Sprint until he landed at American Express.

American Express

Dan’s focus at American Express was innovative and served underserved people in the market, in this case, adults. Therefore, during his experience at American Express, the American businessman focused on new forms of digital payments and launched several product models.

What is most remembered about the New Jersey native at American Express was addressing older adults who found no solutions or services in other institutions, and Schulman offered it to them on a silver platter, with a range of products available.

PayPal

The tremendous work he did at American Express, focusing on underserved or dissatisfied people in the niche, led Dan Schulman to join PayPal as CEO to do the same job with a larger clientele. The company is an online payment system, and many people were not in sync with it.

Dan joined at a time when the company had separated from eBay, and therefore, he had to turn the company into an independent entity capable of managing itself. One of the first actions was to give value to PayPal, something that resonated very well with customers.

By 2017, the company had 18,000 employees and a net profit of 13 million per year, very positive figures compared to previous years. For example, MercadoPago is currently one of PayPal’s competitors in Latin America.

In February 2023, after several years, Dan Schulman stepped down as CEO of PayPal, although he remains on the board of directors. At the same time, he is part of various boards of directors at other companies or serves on advisory committees.

Outside of his business life, he has also been recognized for his fight and commitment to gender equality and diversity. He has been awarded by Human Rights centers and has always been vocal in defending people experiencing homelessness.

Finally, he has been awarded for helping various entrepreneurs around the world, in addition to supporting the economic, financial, and business situations of several companies.Herramientas
