Eugenio Raúl Zaffaroni

Eugenio Raúl Zaffaroni is a jurist specialized in Criminal Law and Criminology, Emeritus Professor of Criminal Law at the University of Buenos Aires, Justice of the Supreme Court of Argentina, and Vice President of both the International Association of Penal Law and the International Society for Social Defense. He was born on January 7, 1940, in Buenos Aires.

Eugenio Raúl Zaffaroni, an extensive professional career

Zaffaroni completed his law and notary studies in 1962 at the University of Buenos Aires. He later obtained a Doctorate in Legal and Social Sciences from the National University of the Littoral in 1964. From then on, he built an extensive national and international career, starting as a Court of Appeals judge in Villa Mercedes (San Luis) and eventually retiring as a judge on the Criminal Chamber of the Federal Capital.

In 1973, he was appointed Attorney General of the Province of San Luis and served as Director-General of the United Nations Latin American Institute for the Prevention of Crime (ILANUD) in San José, Costa Rica. In 1994, he was elected as a National Constituent Deputy and, in 1996, became President of the Drafting Commission of the Buenos Aires Constituent Assembly.

In 1997, Zaffaroni was elected Deputy of Buenos Aires. Later, he served as the Federal Intervenor of the National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism (INADI). He is also a member of the panel of eminent jurists for the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva and chairs the Ministerial Commission for Penal Code Reform in Bolivia.

He has stood out in the field of education, teaching at numerous universities across Latin America and Europe, and was named Professor Emeritus of the University of Buenos Aires in 2007.

Eugenio Zaffaroni is the most cited and studied Criminal Law scholar in Latin America. He has received numerous awards, including the Stockholm Prize in Criminology, awarded in the Swedish capital in 2009, and the Order of Merit from the German government. His works have been published in several countries and translated into Italian, Portuguese, English, French, and German.
