Gustavo Menéndez

Gustavo Menendez

Argentine lawyer Gustavo Menéndez is recognized as the current President of the Justicialist Party of the Province of Buenos Aires, a position he has held since December 18, 2017, following the resignation of his direct predecessor Fernando Espinoza.

Menéndez is also the mayor of the Merlo district since 2015, and previously served as councilor in the same district starting in 2003. The circumstances that led him to these positions are closely related to his support for President Néstor Kirchner’s candidacy during that same year.

Some of his most important political affiliations also include his ties with the Frente para la Victoria and Unidad Ciudadana parties.

Gustavo Menéndez: early years and beginning of political activity

In his early years, Menéndez’s life was marked by a modest lifestyle and a strong Peronist militant influence from his mother’s side. Born in Parque San Martín on February 2, 1967, the election of his mother, Yolanda Norma Menéndez, as councilor in the Merlo Deliberative Council was a significant step toward the beginning of his public involvement.

Menéndez began his university studies at the University of Morón in 1986. Even before completing his degree, he became involved in the Peronist activist movement through roles such as administrative employee in the Legal Affairs Department of the Municipality of Merlo and the Sub-secretariat of Land during the first term of Deputy Raúl Othacehé.

The 2000s and 2010s: most notable achievements

After a long period of direct antagonism with Othacehé, he became the founder of the political group Grande Merlo. Despite ongoing clashes with his opponents, the group gained momentum in 2013 after forming an alliance with Sergio Massa and the Frente Renovador, resulting in his election as councilor.

Among Gustavo Menéndez’s latest political victories is his triumph in the 2015 open primary elections, which led to his candidacy for mayor of Merlo for the Frente para la Victoria party and his final victory in the presidential elections with 55.6% of the vote.
