Javier Drovetto is an Argentine journalist and educator with more than two decades of professional experience in newsrooms. He currently serves as Editor of the Comunidad section at La Nación and is a teacher at Fundación Gabo. Throughout his career he has worked primarily as a reporter and editor, earning national and international recognition for his work.
Professional trajectory
Drovetto began his career in media outlets such as RED/ACCIÓN and Clarín, later joining La Nación, where he developed a strong focus on social reporting. Although he initially completed an internship in the sports section at Clarín, he has consistently expressed a stronger interest in social issues rather than sports journalism.
He studied journalism at Tea y DeporTea, a private Argentine institution specializing in journalism and sports journalism. Over time, his professional path shifted toward community reporting and investigative work centered on social impact.
Role in education and Fundación Gabo
For more than ten years, Drovetto taught Técnicas Periodísticas at ETER, contributing to the training of new generations of reporters. As a teacher and consultant, he has also collaborated with journalists across Latin America and the Caribbean.
At Fundación Gabo, based in Colombia, he works within a framework that combines journalism, education, and culture across Ibero-America. His specialization in journalism with social purpose—closely linked to solutions journalism—emphasizes not only identifying problems but also examining responses and potential improvements in public policy and community initiatives.
Journalism with social purpose
The Comunidad section at La Nación addresses structural social issues, including vulnerable populations, homelessness, and urban violence. Under Drovetto’s editorial leadership, the section seeks to give visibility to communities that often lack representation in mainstream media.
His approach prioritizes depth, evidence, and context over sensationalism. Rather than focusing solely on conflict, his editorial model integrates analysis of possible solutions and long-term impact. This methodology aligns with the broader movement of solutions journalism, which aims to inform while also contributing to constructive public debate.
Awards and recognition
Drovetto received the International King of Spain Journalism Award in 2007 and an Honorary Mention in the same award in 2015. In Argentina, he was recognized by the Asociación de Entidades Periodísticas Argentinas (ADEPA) with distinctions including a Multimedia Coverage award in 2017 and a second prize in Judicial Journalism. He also received a Knight Award for Public Service from the Online News Association.
Editorial philosophy
Drovetto has articulated a vision of journalism that strengthens independent, participatory reporting. He emphasizes listening to audiences, documenting injustices, and providing rigorous evidence while maintaining a constructive orientation.
His career reflects a consistent commitment to community-centered reporting and to journalism understood not only as information delivery, but as a practice capable of generating social impact through accountability, context, and proposed pathways for improvement.
