Jorge Amor Ameal was born in Berazategui, Greater Buenos Aires, in 1948, and has been affiliated with Boca Juniors since 1979. He became a football executive through his mentor, Alfredo Martínez Sosa, a retired sailor who had served as vice president of the club.
Jorge Amor Ameal’s first role as a Boca Juniors executive was in 1985, under the presidency of Antonio Alegre. He served as President of Membership and Vice President of the Sports City. In 1995, he became a board member during the first presidency of Mauricio Macri. From there, he developed his institutional career, supporting the leadership of someone who would later become the President of Argentina. He successively held the positions of President of the Purchasing, Advertising and Concessions Department, First President of “Boca Crece” (“Boca Grows Up”), and President of the Interior and Exterior Department.
In 2008, he ran alongside Pedro Pompilio on the club’s presidential ticket as first vice president. After a series of complications in the elections, where the judiciary had to intervene, he officially took office on June 1, 2008, accompanying the former vice president of Mauricio Macri.
However, on October 30, 2008, Pedro Pompilio unexpectedly passed away as a result of a myocardial infarction. Ameal had to assume the presidency provisionally until November 5, when he formally took office as established by the inheritance statute. His first step as club president was signing an agreement with the National University of Morón to begin expansion works at La Bombonera, although the project would be delayed due to differences within the board of directors. However, this project would continue with the management of his predecessor. His first major decision was the hiring of Carlos Bianchi as head coach of the senior team, and later, on August 10, after a tie in the board of directors, his tie-breaking vote led to the renewal of Juan Román Riquelme’s contract. At that time, Daniel Angelici resigned from his position as club treasurer in disagreement with the decision.
During Ameal’s administration, the “adherent” membership category was incorporated into the club’s statute. This allowed members to become “active” without needing a referral from a committee member, eliminating the requirement of being a friend or family member of one. Another new feature was the “subscription transfer” option, which allowed members to sell their seats so that other fans could attend matches at La Bombonera.
The 2010–11 financial balance resulted in Boca Juniors achieving an overall surplus of AR $50 million.
