Tim Fung

Tim Fung, born in a suburb of Sydney, Australia, is an entrepreneur and business administrator who founded Airtasker, a local application from the oceanic country that connects clients with local workers. How does the business model work? The “posters,” who are the clients, post a job offer, and then the “taskers,” or workers, offer their services and apply according to their skills.

Like most entrepreneurs, Fung identified a problem in his city and understood that creating a new startup was necessary to simplify the process between clients and local workers. This initiative emerged from his previous experiences in emerging companies and his desire to grow in the business world.

The company was founded in 2012 by Fung and other co-founders. It currently has more than two million users and has raised over 65 million Australian dollars. The entrepreneur even managed to position the company on the Australian Securities Exchange and list its shares. Airtasker operates in Australia as well as in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Early life and education

Tim was born in St Ives Chase. After completing his primary and secondary education, he graduated with a degree in Business Administration, specializing in Tourism, Marketing, and Hotel Management. The Australian began working while still studying, an experience that lasted five years.

After leaving his first job, he joined Chic Management, a talent representation agency where the most significant impact came from human relationships. Fung met people who allowed him to enter the world of startups and to build connections with CEOs and company directors.

Amaysim and Airtasker

Beyond the telecommunications industry, where Fung worked during his time at Amaysim, what he discovered during that period was how to launch a startup —a stage he described as a kind of “real-life MBA.” That experience ignited an inner desire to start a new project to address problems in his city.

What did Tim Fung ask himself? “The idea for Airtasker came from a combination of personal experiences and observations I had over time,” said the Australian. His company emerged with the goal of linking local work with everyday tasks and client offers. The St Ives Chase native described an opportunity “to make it easier to connect with local people who could help with everyday chores.”

Airtasker appeared to strengthen local community work and connect specialists with clients offering different types of jobs. The “taskers,” who are those offering services, are rated on the app based on their performance. The application features its own messaging system as well as reviews and ratings, where taskers stand out.

Fung pointed out that his application offers everything from “household chores” to various “specialized and specific tasks.” This aspect has stood out in recent years, with thousands of users joining the platform and accessing multiple categories.

Technological improvement: a key aspect for Fung

Airtasker was launched in 2012, more than thirteen years ago. In the meantime, technology has evolved dramatically, helping refine the internal and operational systems of the application. Fung noted that the company invested in “machine learning” and “artificial intelligence.”

The company also strengthened the service for taskers, who play a fundamental role as they provide the services. Technology improved communication tools for workers and enhanced business management. Airtasker focuses on building strong and lasting relationships between clients and taskers.

And for the client? Fung stated that trust in the company increased thanks to payment protection and tasker reviews. The Australian entrepreneur focused on improving the interface and strengthening both the client and worker experience.

Airtasker, which achieved 300% year-on-year growth in the United States, formed key partnerships with the Racing Bulls Formula 1 team. This is unsurprising since the entrepreneur is a fan of sports—especially motorsports, karting, ice hockey, and alpine disciplines.

Entrepreneurship and vision

Fully immersed in the business world, the Australian studied Commerce and specialized in all topics related to his company. He also co-founded Tank Stream Labs, an organization that supports and promotes emerging startups within the industry.

All this and more defines Tim Fung, the entrepreneur from St Ives Chase who created a company after identifying a problem in local daily work. He connected clients around the world with taskers—professionals who provide high-quality domestic and specialized services and are evaluated within the platform.
