John Michael Cryan

John Michael Cryan was born on December 16, 1960, in Harrogate, England. He is a British businessman and CEO of Deutsche Bank AG in Frankfurt, Germany, since July 2015.

John Cryan studied at Oxford and earned his master’s degree from the University of Cambridge (1979–1982). He worked for Arthur Andersen and later joined S.G. Warburg in London in 1987. Before being appointed Chief Financial Officer of UBS AG in September 2008, Cryan was head of the financial institutions group at UBS.

In the fall of 2008, during the financial crisis, John Cryan advised UBS’s board of directors on the unfolding situation. By 2011, Cryan left UBS citing personal reasons.

In January 2012, he joined the Singapore investment firm Temasek as CEO for Europe, and since January 2015, he has served as a non-executive director of Man Group.

In June 2015, Cryan was appointed co-Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Bank, a position he shared with Jürgen Fitschen until May 2016, when he became the sole CEO.

Concerning his personal life, little is known beyond the fact that he and his wife purchased a home in 2009 in Annapolis, Maryland, USA. They also own a house in London, and they have no children.

Cryan is fluent in German.
