Miguel Galuccio is a businessman and petroleum engineer born in Paraná on April 23, 1968, known for having served as CEO of the state-owned energy company YPF from its nationalization in May 2012 until April 29, 2016.

Who is Miguel Galuccio?

Although Galuccio was born in Panama, he enrolled at the Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires (ITBA) and graduated as a petroleum engineer in 1994. He interned at the INLAB petroleum laboratory and joined YPF shortly after graduating.

His career advanced when he was appointed head of operations and development for oilfields in the southern region. In April 1995, YPF acquired the U.S. oil company Maxus Energy, and Galuccio became part of the newly expanded firm. Later, in 1998, he was transferred to Indonesia, where YPF Internacional managed several oilfields.

YPF

He played a key role in the early strategic development of YPF. However, he resigned shortly after YPF was acquired by Repsol in 1999 due to disagreements with the company’s management model. He then joined the oil services company Schlumberger, where he was appointed general manager of operations for Mexico and Central America.

With the state-owned oil company Pemex, Galuccio successfully signed numerous contracts. These achievements led to his appointment in 2005 as director of the integrated project management division. Later, he was promoted to director of production management at Schlumberger, based in London.

YPF attracted significant investments under Galuccio’s leadership, including foreign capital from Chevron Corporation and Dow Chemical, among other prominent firms. These investments helped position YPF as the world’s second-largest holder of unconventional gas resources, the fourth in oil, and advanced exploration in the Vaca Muerta formation.
