Gregorio Pérez Companc

Gregorio Pérez Companc was born in Buenos Aires on October 12, 1934, and has a well-known life story. In 1946, he was adopted by the Frenchwoman Margarita Companc de Pérez Acuña, daughter of Domingo Companc and Lidia Gassilloud, and wife of Ramón Pérez Acuña since 1907. It was later reported by Luis Majul that he had recently been registered under the name Jorge Gregorio Bazán López, legitimate son of Benito Bazán and Juana Emiliana López, in 1945—one year after being adopted.

Who is Gregorio Pérez Companc?

After being adopted into the French family, Pérez Companc studied at Colegio La Salle Buenos Aires. Following the death of his adoptive brother, he succeeded him as president of Banco Río de la Plata, the shipping company Compañía Naviera Pérez Companc, and SADE S.A.

As a prominent Argentine businessman, he was featured in the well-known magazine Forbes due to his substantial fortune, estimated at over 1.4 billion dollars, making him the fourth richest person in Argentina. He is also known by the nickname “Goyo” among his close friends and family.

He married María del Carmen “Munchi” Sundblad Beccar Varela in 1964. She is the mother of their eight children: Margarita, Jorge, Rosario, Pilar, Cecilia, Pablo, Catalina, and Luis Pérez Companc. Their first daughter, Margarita, died in a car accident on a Patagonian road at just 19 years of age.

The varied paths of his children have made Gregorio Pérez Companc even more well-known. Luis competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Pablo in the Indy Pro Series in the United States—where he had a serious accident in late March 2007 that nearly cost him his life—and Jorge in the World Rally Championship with the Ford Munchi’s World Rally Team and the Dakar Rally.
