Gerardo Rubén Morales

Gerardo Rubén Morales is an Argentine politician and leader of the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR). He is a member of the Argentine Senate representing the Province of Jujuy, elected for the Frente de Jujuy. He was the Vice Presidential candidate of Argentina on the UNA ticket alongside Roberto Lavagna in the 2007 national elections. Since 2015, he has served as Governor of Jujuy, becoming the first non-Peronist to be elected to the position since the return of democracy.

Morales was born in the Province of Jujuy. He worked on the Ferrocarril General Manuel Belgrano as a waiter at the age of 18 and was later promoted to administrator. He enrolled at the National University of Jujuy, where he earned a degree in Accounting. Subsequently, Morales was appointed Director of Settlements at the Provincial Insurance Institute. He also lectured and was politically active at the university, teaching Political Economy courses from 1985 to 1993. He married in 1985 and had three children; he admitted to past infidelities in a 2008 interview.

In 1989, Morales was elected to the provincial legislature and, in 1993, became the leader of the UCR caucus. He served as Chair of the Finance Committee in 1991 and 1992. He was nominated as the UCR candidate for Vice Governor of Jujuy on a losing ticket in 1991, and with the support of party leader Raúl Alfonsín, he ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Jujuy in 1995 and 1999. He resigned from his provincial congressional seat in 2000 to join the national government of President Fernando de la Rúa as Secretary of Social Development. Morales was elected to the Argentine Senate in the 2001 midterm elections.
